RNWMP/RCMP Constable Hudson Salkeld’s Old Photos

RCMP Constable Hudson Moffitt Salkeld

Veterans Joe Collinson sent us the following photographs which he received from Matt SALKELD who is the nephew of Constable Hudson Moffitt SALKELD (Reg.#6809).

Hudson was born on December 1, 1899 and joined the Royal North West Mounted Police on April 22, 1918 at Saskatoon Saskatchewan.  Little is know about this member other than he was stationed at Teslin in 1921 and served the rest of his career in the north.  His last posting was in January 1945 at Esquimalt, British Columbia where he received a medical discharge to pension on April 21, 1945.  The photographs below provide an insight to life in the early days of the RCMP in the north.

Photograph of Constable Hudson Salkeld was taken looking north just south of Whitehorse (approx. 3 miles) where the Yukon River, coming in from the right, passes into Miles Canyon. Miles Canyon was a treacherous stretch of the Yukon River and during the Klondike Gold Rush our members made river travelers by-pass the rapids on a log railroad at a place called Silver City.
