Ladies Auxiliary

BACKGROUND

The Ladies Auxiliary was officially formed on February 26, 1936 in Vancouver, British Columbia, at the request of the Royal North West Mounted Police (R.N.W.M.P.) Vancouver Division, now the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

This was the first RCMP Veterans’ Ladies Auxiliary formed in Canada and celebrated its 83rd Anniversary in April 2019.

We are:

(a) wives/partners, widows, daughters, and granddaughters of retired male RCMP members;

(b) retired female RCMP members (their daughters and granddaughters), and

(c) Associate members (civilian females who have been employed by the Force).

We are a separate entity from the Veterans’ Association with our own elected Executive and projects, but also lend support to the Veterans’ Association.  Our Auxiliary donates financially to Vancouver/Lower Mainland charities as part of our annual Outreach.

MONTHLY REPORT, MAY 2022

Ladies Auxiliary Proposed Luncheon/Meeting, June 2, 2022:  Although we had tentatively booked for a luncheon/meeting at Hazelmere Golf & Tennis Club for Thursday, June 2nd, we unfortunately had to cancel because we had so few Auxiliary members available to attend, and it was pointless to book for only a few attendees at this time.  Regarding this June meeting, a number of our members did not feel that they were ready to meet and eat in a public place yet, some were leaving on holidays, and others were not feeling up to traveling to a meeting.  Also, we do not usually meet in the month of June so some had already made plans to be elsewhere. We are looking forward to resuming our monthly luncheon/meetings by September 2022.

A number of our oldest members have indicated that they might not be returning once we are able to meet again, because of change of age and health situations over the past 3 years.  Hopefully, we can secure rides for some of these members who are not able to attend on their own, but may accept a ride if offered.

A Membership Drive:  To encourage new members to apply for membership in our Ladies Auxiliary, a Membership Drive is in the planning stage, and once the health situation (COVID) becomes more stable, we can offer applicants the benefits of belonging, such as our luncheons, meetings, events, etc.  By becoming a member of our Ladies Auxiliary, they also become an Associate member of the Vancouver Division of the RCMP Veterans’ Association.  We do have a list of names to be contacted, but, up until recently, it was not felt wise to start a membership drive if we did not have anything secure enough to offer at the time, such as meeting dates.

Duty Done: Memories of Fairmont Barracks:” It is hoped that this book, mainly written by members of the Vancouver Division and edited by Vancouver Division Veterans, Donna Morse and Ric Hall, will soon be released for distribution by the publisher.   An announcement should be forthcoming soon!
