Death by Apparent Suicide
Dear Association Members,
It is with great sadness that we convey the news of the loss of another member of the police brotherhood to apparent suicide. Toronto Police Service Constable Mike Austin with 21 years service died on Thursday (February 6th., 2020) apparently by his own hand inside a parking garage at the Toronto Police Headquarters on College Street in Toronto.
We would like to express the Association’s deepest sympathies and condolences to Mike’s family, friends and co-workers in the Toronto Police Service. We wish them all great strength in the coming days and weeks in meeting the tremendous stresses that they will face.
This tragic event serves to remind all of us who are serving or have served in law enforcement that we are not infallible, that we should seek help when overwhelmed by events. The Association does have help available which is not confined to our members. Our advocates and chaplains are more than willing to help people in need find the services they require.
