Public Commentary on Rideau Hall Outcome

Public Commentary on Rideau Hall Outcome

Dear Members of the Association

The voice of the Association is being heard more and more these days. We are speaking up for the serving members and keeping a sharp eye (through Ruby Burns and Steve Walker) on what is happening in the benefits arena for retired members.

Our Divisions are playing a pivotal role in holding politicians’ feet to the fire and it is most invigorating to see members challenging Parliamentarians in areas that without us would largely be forgotten.

The most recent outrage of NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh’s comments has certainly and not surprisingly touched a nerve in our Association.

I am pleased to report that in addition to Rick Bohus’ extremely well-crafted letters we now have correspondence initiated by Newfoundland and Labrador President Leo O’Brien expressing his extreme disappointment with MP Singh’s behaviour.

Leo’s correspondence follows below and I would like to take this opportunity to thank him for undertaking this action. Our Association is built on our Divisions and the outpouring of support for the serving members in the past few weeks has been nothing short of astounding and exceptionally effective. We can all be very proud of our Association and the work our members are doing.

Letter to John James “Jack” Harris – New Democratic Party Member of Parliament for St John’s East. – ~ Jul 14th, 2020

Good Day. Mr. Harris. I hope you’re doing well. I understand you are having some medical issues, so I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all the very best.

I am writing today to you today as my MP and as a member of the New Democratic Party of Canada to express how upsetting it was for me to hear your Leader Jagmeet Singh make those ridiculous statements he made last week regarding the arrest made at Rideau Hall. For your leader to make such a ridiculous statement in my view make him unworthy to be a Member of Parliament.

In my view, his comments in itself were totally “racist”, and he should apologize, not only to The RCMP and all Police Officers in Canada, but to the Canadian public as well. For someone who worked for 36 years as a member of the RCMP and provided protection to Prime Ministers Martin and Chretien, I believe our members did an outstanding job in disarming the intruder at Rideau Hall and should be commended, yet your Leader choose to turn it in a Racist matter. This is shameful.

As a retired member of the RCMP and as President of the RCMP NL Veterans Association I am writing to you to express my disgust with your Leaders comments.

I have respect for you Mr. Harris and I supported you in the last election. Unfortunately I will not be able to support you in the future or any member of the NDP as long as Jagmeet Singh is your Leader.

Best regards

Leo O’Brien
President RCMP NL Veterans Association

Reponse from MP Harris to Leo O’Brien’s letter – July 16th 2020

Subject: RE: Public Commentary on Rideau Hall Outcome / Commentaire public sur les résultats de Rideau Hall

Dear Mr. O’Brien:

Thank you for writing to Mr. Harris concerning the attack on Rideau Hall. I have let him know about your email.

We are very glad that the outcome was successful due to the actions of the RCMP on site.

For your information Mr. Harris did have a meeting just last week with Mr. Sauve. The discussion across the country concerning our police forces and systemic racism is important.

He has been working very hard on making sure that the Public Safety Committee of the House of Commons is meeting on this issue. In fact they are meeting next week. I can send you the link to watch or listen if you and your colleagues are interested.

If you would like to speak with Mr. Harris please call our office at 709-772-7171 I can arrange to set something up.

Thank you for your comments on his health. He is doing well.

Sincerely,

Amanda
