October 17, 1950 – December 31, 2024
The family of Kenneth Robert Handy – aka “Duke”, sadly announces his passing on Dec.31, 2024 from a cancerous brain tumor. Ken was 74.
He will be greatly missed by his loving wife, Krystyna, his children Kevin (Jessica), Lauren and stepchildren Courtney and Jared (Amber.) Grandchildren Liam, Landon, Oliver and Nora.
Brothers Doug (Mirielle) and Larry (Fern) beloved nieces and nephews and extended family are left to mourn.
Ken arrived at Depot April, 1972, with his first posting being Campbell River detachment. He was a dedicated member who spent 16 years on Vancouver Island then transferred to the Lower Mainland where he served in several positions. He was commissioned to Inspector and served at Burnaby Detachment and would further be promoted to Superintendent. He had a celebrated career of 36 plus years and made a profound impact on more colleagues than he could have ever known. He was truly “an officer and a gentleman.”
Ken was very proud of all kids and their spouses, both in their personal and professional lives. He would take any chance he could to brag about how they were doing and loved to mention, “they are all contributing to pension.”
The grandchildren brought much joy (and exhaustion!). Reading a story was a favourite pastime for all grandkids – they frequently would bring a book to Pa Ken/Pawpaw in his lazy boy.
Being a sports and outdoors enthusiast, Ken played various sports in his life and enjoyed watching the kids and grandkids at their sports and activities and navigating the Michelle Marie along the West Coast. Community was very important to Ken, and he loved to contribute – be it through coaching, Scouting or sitting on Executive Club boards.
“I’ve got to call….” Keeping in touch was important to Ken. High school chums, troop mates, long-time friends and family were all on his call list. No one’s birthday was ever missed.
Ken and Krys retired to Vancouver Island and enjoyed golf, beverages on the patio, camping, camp fires, kayaking, coffee groups, and just relaxing. Ken loved to tell stories and jokes, all with a twinkle in his eye and a hearty laugh.
Ken always had the Canadian Maple Leaf on his hat, shirt or pin while travelling. He was a dedicated Mountie who wore his Red Serge with pride, and when reflecting on his career always said “I would do every day over again.”
To Liam and Landon, “no having any fun.
And to Oliver and Nora, “Yaba Daba Doo.”
The family would like to express deep gratitude to Neil and Rose Gillis who have been with Ken and Krys every step of the way. Michael and Henny Lynch for their unwavering support, and countless family and community members – near and far-for all the love. To Dr. Hunter and the staff at Oceanside Hospice, an immense thank you for your empathetic care.
