Centre of Clinical Excellence

The Advocacy and Support of RCMP Veterans is a primary function for the Veterans Association(s) and in the Vancouver area we have found a great support through this centre which is located in the Royal Canadian Legion in Surrey (Whalley), BC, which is formally known as the Legion Veterans Village.  Links to this group and their many related services are within this posting.

The Centre of Clinical Excellence (CCE) for Veterans and First Responders has added Primary Care Services.  One of the primary challenges facing RCMP Veterans seeking health services is the need for access to primary care. RCMP Veterans often must travel long distances to access health facilities, which can be tiring, expensive, and time-consuming. Additionally, the waiting times for appointments are frequently long, leading to delays in treatment and increased risk of complications. Addressing this challenge requires a paradigm shift in how veterans access care.

Veterans need to have access to primary care for several reasons:

  • Continuity of care: Access to primary care ensures that veterans receive consistent and ongoing medical attention, which is essential for managing chronic conditions and preventing potential health issues.
  • Preventive care: Primary care providers can help veterans stay healthy by conducting routine check-ups, screenings, and vaccinations, thus preventing diseases and complications before they occur.
  • Management of physical and mental health conditions: Primary care providers play a crucial role in managing both physical and mental health conditions commonly experienced by veterans, such as PTSD, traumatic brain injuries, and musculoskeletal problems.
  • Coordination of care: Primary care providers serve as the central point of contact for coordinating care between specialists and healthcare providers, ensuring that veterans’ health needs are met holistically and comprehensively.
  • Health education and support: Primary care providers can educate veterans about healthy lifestyle choices, provide counselling on mental health issues, and offer support for managing chronic conditions, empowering veterans to take control of their health and well-being.

Overall, access to primary care is crucial for  RCMP Veterans to receive high-quality, comprehensive, and coordinated healthcare that addresses their unique needs and challenges as former service members.

RCMP members can begin rostering into these services by following the link included here.  For more information, please see the attached link.

Another critical issue facing Veterans’ medical assessments. The CCE is in a position to assist with disability assessments and paperwork.

Of course, the CCE offers many healthcare delivery items for RCMP Veterans, and a link to their updated services booklet, which provides more detail.
