2020 RCMP Memorial Service to Move Online

2020 RCMP Memorial Service to move online

August 28, 2020
Regina, Saskatchewan

News release

Honouring fallen members is of utmost importance to the RCMP and the families of those who paid the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

It’s woven throughout the RCMP Academy, Depot Division. Cadets walk on streets that bear the names of the fallen, learn to march in front of the RCMP Cenotaph and the most visible act of remembrance is the RCMP National Memorial Service held the second Sunday of September.

Due to these extraordinary times, this year’s Memorial Service will be a closed ceremony. Unlike previous years, only two cadet troop and critical staff will be in attendance to put on a shortened program.

Families, colleagues and friends of the fallen, as well as members of the media, will be able to watch the event online:

This year, no names will be added to the Cenotaph, Honour Roll and Memorial Wall. This decision was not made lightly and involved the families of recently fallen members, Constable Allan Poapst and Constable Heidi Stevenson.

The RCMP will provide a formal Memorial Service when COVID-19 restrictions are no longer in effect.

Quotes

“All of us want to serve and protect Canadians. The health and safety of our members, families and cadets—as well as the prosperity of the training program as a whole—is dependent on everyone following strict COVID-19 protocols.

As an organization, the RCMP must adapt to the challenges in front of us while understanding the importance of tradition.

I look forward to the time when we can invite friends, families and colleagues of our fallen back to the RCMP Academy to pay tribute to those on the Honour Roll.”

– Assistant Commissioner Jasmin Breton, Commanding Officer of Depot Division
