HAZELMERE GOLF & TENNIS CLUB,” SURREY, B.C.

This special buffet dinner event was held on a lovely spring evening, starting at 4:30 p.m. for a “meet and greet” with our Guest Speaker,” former R.C.M.P. Commissioner (Rtd.), Beverly Ann Busson.

Before dinner was served to the 100 in attendance at 6:00 p.m., the two head tables, led by Bev and our President, Donna Morse, were piped in by R.C.M.P. Pipe Band member, Derek Smith, much to the surprise and enjoyment of those attending, and to Bev as well.

She was instrumental in having the Vancouver Pipe Band formed when she was formerly C.O. “E” Division and stationed in Vancouver, and she holds a place on honour with the Pipe Band, so it was fitting that she be honoured in this way. Veteran, Gord Cave, who acted as Master–of-Ceremonies, welcomed everyone, then led in the singing of “O’Canada.” Veteran, Les Holmes, said Grace.

Following dinner, Bev, as Guest Speaker, gave us an overview of her life in the Force, with many amusing anecdotes, and the realities of rising to the rank of Commissioner to command a 25,000 member Police Force.

Veteran, Donna Morse, who was one of Bev’s Troop Mates in 1974 (Troop #17), presented Bev with a silk scarf in a Native design, as a thank you on behalf of the Veterans’ Association.

Veteran, Victor Irving, presented our guest with a set of five signed and framed Arnold Freiberg prints which had been given to him by the artist for presentation to her. During the evening, Bev was presented with numerous books relating to the Force, recently published by the authors in attendance.

Numerous door prizes were raffled off near the end of the evening. Treasurer, Rupert Bullock, handled the 50/50 tickets and draw which was won by guest, Ed Bulpitt ($162.50). The same amount will go to the Veterans’ Outreach, PRDA (Pacific Riding for Developing Abilities).

The evening formally ended at 8:30 p.m. but guests were asked to stay and continue to mingle and visit, with Bev being one of the last to leave when the doors closed at 10:00 p.m.

The Social Committee wishes to thank all who assisted and participated in this successful event!
