When a RCMP Veteran passes away – their old colleagues pause for a moment to reflect on the good times they had and the memories they created.

 

 

 

 

 

Despite the times that deceased member was serving their communities and away from their families, the Veteran’s family members are extremely proud of the contributions made by the recently departed.

The following individuals have passed away on the past few weeks:

#17856 – Retired Staff Sergeant William Joseph HULGAARD passed away on August 28, 2016.

Bill joined the Force on August 8, 1952 and served his entire career in “E” Division until his retirement on April 3, 1989.  His last position was the NCO ic Unit “B” Freeway Patrol.  Bill is credited in writing the first radar speeding ticket in the Force white stationed at Burnaby Detachment on July 15, 1955.  On this occasion, the two other members of this first radar operation were Constables Edmund John Clark (Reg.#16520) and  William John Stacey (Reg.#16069).  One of these original traffic tickets was appealed and the charge was dismissed on the grounds the police were not properly trained in the use of radar which resulted in one or two week courses for all radar operators and certificates were issued.

In 1995, a “S/Sgt. Bill Hulgaard Award” was created in his honour and it is presented annually to the best rider in the RCMP Motorcycle Escort Team.  In 2002, Bill co-authored with RCMP Veteran Jack White (Reg.#16721/O.795) a book entitled “Honoured Places” and published by Heritage House. – You can read his obituary here.  

Celebration of Life for Bill Hulgaard on September 24th, 1 to 4pm. It will take place at the Langley Golf and Banquet Centre, 21550 – 44Ave in Langley.

#41525 – Staff Sergeant Fred James PRIESTLEY passed away on August 20, 2016 while recovering from surgery at the Bridgewater Hospital (Nova Scotia).

Fred joined the Force on November 20, 1989 and served in both “O” and “HQ” Divisions.  In 2010, he was promoted to Staff Sergeant – You can read his obituary here.

#19274 – Retired Staff Sergeant Lorraine Charles McCARTHY passed away on August 23, 2016 at the Saint John Regional Hospital.

Charley joined the Force on March 5, 1956 and served his entire career in “J” Division until his retirement on April 5, 1995. – You can read his obituary here.

#27368 – Retired Corporal Terence J.T. STEVELY passed away on August 29, 2016 from pancreatic cancer at his home in Yorkton Saskatchewan.

Terry joined the Force on May 23, 1969 and served his entire career in “F” Division until his retirement on October 19, 2005. – You can read his obituary here.
